The Humane Society of Warren County
(HSWC) will host the first annual Dragon Boat Races (Waggin for Dragons) this Saturday, August 23rd. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 8:30 am with practice rounds and races to follow throughout the day until 4:00 pm.
The races this year feature eight teams of 20 paddlers each competing in large gaily painted and adorned boats. Dragon Boat racing originated in Southern China and gained popularity in North America in the 1970s as a corporate team building sport and fundraiser
Located on the Shenandoah River at the Front Royal Country Club (902 Country Club Road
, Front Royal, VA 22630 with additional parking and shuttle from the nearby Lowes parking lot, admission is free to spectators
Today’s HSWC receives no funds and is not affiliated with any national organizations like the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA yet in our community since 2011 they have been wagering an aggressive campaign to increase pet adoptions and decrease the rate of unnecessary euthanasia at our shelter. Through their efforts and with the help of membership dues, fund raising events (like the Dragon Boat races), individual contributions, the Julia Wagner Trust, “animal bank” donations, and the Warren County Government contract the HSWC has maintained a no-kill rate for dogs since 2012 for the first time in their history and has increased pet adoptions by 70%! A no-kill status for all animals is within our reach as a community. With over 2,500 animals passing through their doors every year you too can help.
Your membership of just $30 a year covers the cost of 6 rabies vaccinations or all vaccines necessary for one animal. Your membership dues are tax deductible and allow you to vote at the HSWCs annual meeting plus receive their regular newsletter.
