Do's and Don't of the Christmas Party

Okay people, listen up. We have all done it at least once in our lifetime. What? Made a total fool of ourselves in front of someone that we really wish we hadn’t. Most of the time we can blame this on our friendly holiday drink! Yep, you guessed it. This is the one article that if you follow the advice that is given in it, you could really save yourself a lot of humiliation and embarrassment.

There are two type of holiday parties that I’m talking about. One is the office party. If you act like a drunken fool in front of your co-workers, you will be the talk of the office for the following year and I assure you that your boss will take special notice. Even if he is a little tipsy himself. The second is the family diner party. This is where you see the distant relatives that only come around once a year. Save you mother the embarrassment and lay off the eggnog before it is to late.

Remember not to be a piggly wiggly either. Yes, there is a spread of food to die for but you are not doing yourself a favor by tasting everything that there is. One plate is plenty. Do NOT go back for seconds. Desert is okay but don’t make a sampler plate. Chose one and that’s it.


 

Find out what type of attire is expected. If you show up to a casual party in your stiletto’s or a three piece suit it tends to send off an air that makes you look like you feel you are above the rest. On the other hand if you are in jeans and a t-shirt you may risk looking like you just don’t give a darn and you are there for the beer! A safe outfit for guys is usually a nice pair of khaki’s and a dress shirt, if you are unsure. For a woman, a nice pair of slacks will do with a blouse or a sweater.

Be careful what you chose for your conversation piece. You should always try to avoid the topics that are debate starters. Things like politics and religion can land you in an unwanted confrontation. When there is alcohol being served, people want to talk. Make sure the subject is a happy one. You may also want to prepare yourself for a little elevator talk. By that I mean try to be ready for that awkward moment when you may be left with someone you don’t know all to well OR with the bosses boss! You don’t want to sound like a news reporter and the weather has become far to cliché to talk about. Try something like “who’s cooking your holiday dinner” or maybe a compliment on something the person is wearing. People love to talk about themselves. Compliments open up a way for them to do that.

Don’t bring gifts! If you are going to give out gifts, make sure you do it in private and be sure you are giving a gift to someone who will likely reciprocate. It is very uncomfortable to have to give someone a gift when someone else is standing there and you have nothing for them. Same rule

applies for someone who you are not sure has something for you. If you aren’t sure, leave it on the persons desk. Don’t make them feel like a heal for nothing having anything for you.

Have fun, be safe, stay sober and keep is simple! Easy enough… I hope.
